Well, it has been a while since my last post, and a lot has happened in the past few weeks.  I am back with a little bits about everything that has transpired.

As far as Paleo goes, it was a pretty good success. I managed to stick to it the entire 4 weeks in terms of food, however, I drank apple cider and wine on several occasions.  I cooked a lot and enjoyed pretty much everything I made but for a couple of exceptions.  

On August 31, I flew to Moscow, Russia where I stayed for 2 weeks.  The trip was very relaxing in that I chose to see only very few people, not to stress myself with obligations, and generally go with the flow.  I stayed with my sister and her husband, and this arrangement provided for many conversations late into the night accompanied by good food and wine.  There are several things worth noting that took place during my trip:

- the day after my arrival I went through a pretty intense therapy experience, where a piece of my human psyche puzzle was uncovered.  It was cathartic. 

- two days into my visit, I fell ill with a horrid virus that took me out of commission for a day.  Frankly, I don't remember being this sick in the last 10 years, so I attributed it to the after effects of therapy.

- many many soul searching talks with my sister.  They tired me out emotionally and mentally but I have grown because of them.

- a wonderful lunch with my old friend, with whom I don't stay in close enough touch. Last time we had seen each other was 5 years ago when she was in LA flying back to Moscow from Hawaii.  It felt as if these 13 years of us living apart have never happened. It was magic. 

- Bulka's condition rapidly deteriorated and I flew back in a hurry and worry over her health.  Turned out that the medication for pain was giving her bad side effects, she has been seen by a specialist, and we will be starting stem cell therapy for her in the nearest future.

It was good to be back, however, it took me at least two weeks to readjust to the time zone.  

I have been mostly lazy, enjoying a busy social calendar and ignoring so many home chores... Kind of embarrassing.

The last thought will sound cryptic but I am not at liberty to speak openly here.  Events have transpired that forced me to think harder than ever about causality.  Something that was to me the source of new and inspiration for quite some time became detrimental to someone else.  This has pushed me to a rather grim extreme, where I decided to avoid any possibility of ambiguity.  Such decision is limiting, and I have the worst time with limitations.  Time to grow up?

Day 4 of Paleo Challenge

This has been the easiest start to any diet I have ever attempted, and I can't be happier about it. There have been no major cravings, although a thought of a glass of a nice dry wine did cross my mind a couple of times. I have began to like my coffee black, and my lunches have been the subject of a lot of office envy and questioning :-) I am over my hard boiled egg for breakfast though, and today I came up with something more exciting to replace it with.

My menu today:

Breakfast: hard boiled egg and black coffee
Snack: a plum and a few pieces of dried apricots
Lunch: blackened salmon and a salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, jicama, spring lettuce mix and olive oil, lime juice and cayenne pepper and paprika dressing
Dinner: it kind of never happened, I had a couple of plums and a few roasted cauliflower florets as I was cooking for tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, I am very excited about it:

For breakfast, I will have a totally paleo compliant banana strawberry pie with an almond meal crust. For lunch, it will be a couple of slices of herbes de Provence pork roast, roasted cauliflower and a salad (I have been really into the concept of salads in jars, it's super pretty and convenient :-) )

Day 2 of 30 days paleo

Surprisuingly, everything is going smoothly as far as my experiment is going.  I am definitely glad that I have been bringing my lunch to work for the last couple of weeks, and being in the groove it has been easier to simply adjust the menu. I haven't had any cravings, except I couldn't figure out what to about sugar free gum. I usually chew on one after lunch, but it bothers me that it's definitely not paleo. I even bought a bunch of fresh mint leaves and will take a sprig tomorrow to work.

So... Here's my menu from today:

Breakfast: two hard boiled eggs + black coffee (no sugar, no milk)
Snack: a couple of dried apricots
Lunch: homemade meatloaf (ground beef, red bell pepper, onion, tomato, egg, spices) + roasted cauliflower + salad (EVOO, cucumber, radishes, tomatoes)
Snack: a plum, a nectarine
Dinner: a few slices of a freshly grilled steak, three asparagus stalks, half of heirloom tomato
Dessert: a plum

So far, I have not craved anything sweet.  Haven't had issues with giving up my nightly wine either, although I am still worried that it's only been two days, and on a stressful day I might be tempted to have a glass or two to unwind.

I am loving my menu, except for breakfast. Need to dig up some easy, make-ahead paleo breakfast recipes for dishes that I can bring to work.

I think I will start taking photos and maybe posting recipes for my dishes. Just to create a reference for myself and be of help in case anyone needs inspiration.

30 days paleo challenge

В общем, я решилась -- сегодня был первый день 30 days paleo challenge.  О программе можно прочитать здесь:

Пока я к этому делу подхожу таким образом, что день прошел, вот и отлично, если так проживу неделю, здорово, если и все 30 дней -- так совсем классно.  Уже сейчас точно знаю, что на этой неделе будет пара нарушений, я их постараюсь свести только к сухому красному вину. 

Мое сегодняшнее меню:

Завтрак: два яйца, сваренных вкрутую + черный кофе
Перекус: слива
Обед: говядина, тушеная с баклажаном, кабачком цуккини и помидорами + свежий салат (помидор, редис, огурец, болгарский перец)
Перекус: несколько половинок сушеных абрикосов
Ужин: помидор и огурец, сбрызнутые соком лайма, с солью и приправой чили. Потом небольшой кусок meatloaf (говяжий фарш, болгарский перец, лук, яйцо, помидор, приправы) и немного roasted cauliflower. 

На сладкое не тянуло, но были слабость и головная боль.  Сейчас тянет на привычный бокал вина, но держусь.
